Herding, Nipping, & Biting

An Aussie will attempt to herd children, animals, lawn mowers, and other random things.  It is even likely that you will be herded at some point.

Herding can be nipping at your ankles, calves, or butt as you walk.  It could be barking at something.  And it could come in the form of pushing you or laying on your feet so you can't move.  Some people may find this behavior intolerable.  If that is the case, and Aussie isn't for you.

If herding characteristics and behaviors are something you are willing to understand, make sure you talk to your Aussie breeder about the herding drive they breed for. Some aussies are primarily bred to herd, others less, but all Aussies have the herding in their nature.

A Herding nip is NOT a bite. The dog can not vocalize the danger or concern it feels when you go a certain direction.  He also can't vocalize his happiness you are headed in the direction he thinks is wonderful.  Rewarding acceptable herding behavior is a good way to help him understand how to communicate with you.

If you are having issues with herding, nipping, or biting, I recommend you seek a trainer familiar with herding dogs to help you learn how to train your dog.
